Some would say that no news is good news.
Well not when it is April, winter is a coming, so sit down, hold on tight and have a gander under "calendar of CX Events" to see what the go is for NZCX in 2014.
Some finer details still need to be finalised (national series) but the meat of the sandwich is present with the Nationals date and venue named, along with local dates.
If you love the facebook then hit up "auscxmagazine" for keeping up to date on what the boys and girls are doing over Australia.
There are a number of MTB events that allow for CX bikes to be ridden, some even have there own category. Get out on ya bike and support these events during the preseason, but more importantly help showcase your skills on the skinny tyres and show the fat tyre full sus crew how to really ride a bike.
That is all for now.

Its a new(ish) chapter
My name is Gavin Mason. Yeap thats me in the photo. "Going down with the ship" it best demonstrates how committed i am!(to the sport :-) )
I have been installed with the auspicious task of taking over the NZCX admin/managing/coordination/Franchise. Well to be honest i was the only person to volunteer.
Long story short, the sport of CX is at an important crux, It is growing and requires a structure..
What i want is to hear from the people and create/implement a structure for the events/licensing that fits to needs of the sport and that of the/a governing body.
I believe to give the sport any credibility the sport needs to be moved forward in the correct direction.
There are a lot of opportunities to get a lot of positive leverage for the growth of Cyclocross cycling and opportunities to grow the discipline of Cyclocross with practical governance and a healthy working relationships.
Feel free to email/pm msg with ideas/thoughts and ideas so that 2014 and beyond is in the best interest of the sport.

9 Sept 2013 The Future of NZCX?
NZCX has been going for two years now. The NZCX website and facebook page has principally been managed by Dan, Andrew and Carey. While it’s been fun, we all feel it is time to let someone else, or a group of else’s, take over the reins. The principal public focus of NZCX is to promote the sport through information and co-ordinate the National Series. However there is a lot behind the scenes in terms of answering questions, liaising of new centres wanting to develop the sport keeping up-to-date to the sport internationally (for facebook postings). Importantly when big decisions needed to be made about the National Series we elected to survey members, rather than make the decisions without the riders input.
In terms of the National Series the key duties are:
Jan/Feb – Call for expressions for centres to host a national series race.
March – Work out a national series calendar in discussion with various centres. Update the website site.
April/May – Collect information on regional cyclocross series and post on website. Investigate and answer the issues with the points allocated.
June – Sept – Update national series points , update information.
We have always wanted to get some trophy’s made for the National Series champions. However NZCX does not generate any money. In the first year we tried to collect a small portion of the entry fee for each national series race, but being the first year a lot of organisers we running events without any spare money to contribute to the overall series. Ideally a sponsor of the series would be ideal. We have tried to secure one but to no avail. One possibility is for NZCX becoming a
club and/or charitable organisation, with membership fee’s paying for the national series prizes and trophy’s.
NZCX doesn’t really have anything to do with the National Championship race. That is managed by BikeNZ. We have been happy to list it on the website, be part of the national series, but that is far as we have ever taken it. We personally think the National Championship would attract a lot more riders if it was unofficial – but that is not our decision.
The only expense NZCX has is the cost of the web domain name - $56 per year. We encourage each region to have their own blog or website so we don’t have to update our website all the time. We just link to it.
Each year the sport gets bigger and bigger. And thanks to people like Alex and Genevieve little old NZ is starting to get international attention. This year we have started to get enquiries from overseas riders wanting to compete in the nationals series in their off season. The number of races around the country is growing each year. Places like Dunedin held a 11 race series this year, Marlborough also a very successful series and Rotorua had its first race. Hawkes Bay still has a very strong scene and Wellington continue do their own thing. It is a exciting time for the development of the sport in NZ.
So, if you are interested in being involved in the development of the sport please contact us through the website. We will collate names, introduce you to one another, and let you get on with it. If no one is interested, then we will have no choice but to close the NZCX website and facebook page down.
Dan, Andrew and Carey thank you for your support over the last few years.
NZCX.

Gavin Mason taking on Wanaka under lights.
First Event in the 2013 Winter Games
The super keen locals of Wanaka introduced Cyclo Cross to the Winter Games as well as young riders in their first ever Cyclo Cross Race. There were 20 local children/teens ranging from a 3 year old on a balance bike to teenagers who are 17. The evening started off with a very casual warm up by the kids to figure out the technical course. The Under 11s did 2 laps and the 11 -17s did 3 laps.
By 6:30 the Elite guys and girls (2) were chomping at the bit to start on time at 7pm.
Logan Horn (CHCH) lead convincingly for the first 4 laps, but Scott Lyttle (Formerly of NZ Pure Black Racing and Masterton/ now Dunedin) crept closer each lap. At one stage they were abreast across the barely 3m wide track. Scott did get in front for one of the later laps, but Logan made a move to take back the lead and finish about 20 m in front.
Meanwhile Alex Revell (Revolution Bike Wellington) pushed from 4th to 3rd halfway through the 35 min. race, and held 3rd place for the rest of the race. Local Cyclo Cross Legend Gavin Mason headed out very strong but gave away a comfortable 4th to Mark (Cabin) Leishman with a few laps to go. A 5th place finish still left Gavin smiling with a podium spot and medal. In a strong 6th was a past Mountain Bike National Champ, Dayle Mclauchlan, who with the rest, will line up on Saturday to decide the 2013 National Champions Title.
Two elite women raced hard with the men and finished well up in the field, Jenna Makill (RedBull) took the gold medal and Gayle Brownlee took silver. So concludes the 1st ever Cyclo Cross Race in the Winter Games! There will be a Dirt Jam under lights tomorrow night and more Cyclo Cross Racing in Lismore Park on Saturday from 11-3. Elites racing at 2pm sharp for the National Championship title. Sunday in Queenstown will be the final race of the Winter Games Cyclo Cross Series.

17 July 2013
The reults of the National Series Points survey are in. 50 respondents, 70% of which support the change and 30% don't support the change. If it were election, then that result would be "overwhelming majority", so we are running with the change - the National Series placings will be determined by your best four results, irrespective of what part of the
country they are held. Perhaps next year the north island can conjure up more than two national series races? Or have two national series races in a weekend?
Round two of the NZ cyclocross series will be Hosted by Cyclocross Marlborough this weekend at the Wither Hills Farm Park in Blenheim. For more ino see the following link.

We have fielded a lot of questions/complaints/criticism about the points for the Nationals series this year. As a result of this we amended the points after the first race had been held in Hastings. We thought that was Ok, to be fairer to north islanders where there were only two races, but where criticized for doing this by some south islanders. So we have decided to do it democratically. Please go to survey monkey and advise your support for either your best 4 races irrespective of where are held OR status quo (at least one of your best 4 races having to be in the north and south islands). You've got 48 Hrs. Go!
